A body was discovered at around 7.20am this morning after British Transport Police were told there had been a casualty between Inverkeithing and Edinburgh Gateway.
Rail services between Edinburgh, Fife and Dundee were disrupted.
A British Transport Police spokesman commented: “BTP were called at 7.22am on Monday July 13 to the Forth Rail Bridge following a report of a casualty near the tracks,”
“Officers attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are currently underway to establish the full circumstances behind the person’s death and how they came to be near the railway.”
A Scotrail spokesperson commented: “Services between Edinburgh and Fife, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen are subject to delay and alteration while the emergency services attend an incident between Edinburgh Gateway and Inverkeithing.
“We’ve arranged replacement buses to run between Edinburgh Gateway and Inverkeithing, but customers can also travel on selected local Stagecoach East buses with their valid train ticket, as well as on Edinburgh trams.”
